Vestards Šimkus

Happiness: to maintain one’s sense of self in this wide, wide world

Vestards Šimkus (b.1984) is one of the most talented young pianists and composers in Europe. His unique interpretations of classical and contemporary music are always electrifying and filled with emotion. The musical artist has drawn much acclaim outside of Latvia and has received numerous international awards.

Šimkus began to play the piano at the age of 5 and studied under the tutelage of various accomplished teachers, both in Latvia and abroad. However, he says that one of his best teachers has been nature, and that he obtains his greatest inspiration from observing the processes of nature at work.

The artist is known for his individual approach to each composition. His creative interpretations, stylistic diversity and tireless dedication to his profession have drawn many musical ensembles to collaborate with him, both in the recording studio and at live music concerts across the world.

Among the many international awards and prizes that Šimkus has received, one might mention 1st place and Grand Prix awards at the International Balys Dvarionas Competition for Young Pianists and Violinists in Vilnius (Lithuania – 1994), the Frederick Chopin International Young Pianists Competition in Warsaw (Poland – 1996), the Mozart International Young Pianists Competition in Riga (Latvia – 1997), the International Performers’ Competition in Stockholm (Sweden – 2001), the 5th World Piano Olympics in Bad Kissingen (Germany – 2007) and the Maria Canals International Music Competition in Barcelona (Spain – 2009).
