Gidon Kremer (b.1947) is a world famous violinist and conductor. He is known for his masterful, creative and sometimes playful musical performances, as well as for his wide-ranging repertoire, which incorporates both classical and contemporary composers. He is also known as the founder of a chamber music festival in Lockenhaus, Austria, with a focus on new and unconventional programming.
Over the course of more than four decades, Kremer has collaborated with some of the world’s greatest musicians, both on the concert stage and in the recording studio.
One Kremer’s most notable achievements is the Kremerata Baltica chamber orchestra, which he founded in 1997 and which is composed of talented young musicians (average age 27) from the three Baltic States. This outstanding orchestra performs more than 60 concerts per year, and is supported by the Ministries of Culture of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. It has surpassed Kremer’s initial expectations and now truly serves as a bridge between the world’s diverse cultures.
