The youth choir ‘Kamēr, which celebrates its 20th anniversary this year, has been at the pinnacle of European and world fame for several years. Under the artistic direction of its founder and chief conductor Māris Sirmais, the choir performs masterful interpretations of classical and modern music in Latvia and abroad.
Kamēr has received more than 70 competition awards and in 2006 won a gold medal in China at the world’s largest choir competition – the 4th World Choir Olympics in Xiamen. Receiving the highest score in all three competition categories, ‘Kamēr’ earned the title of World Choir Olympic Champion among 400 choirs with 20000 singers.
The choir’s unique ‘World Songs of the Sun’ project featured 17 songs about the Sun especially composed for ‘Kamēr’ by eminent composers from all around the world. The Songs of the Sun were first performed in Riga in 2008. In this unheard-of-before musical project music portrayed our source of Life, the Sun, in various dimensions.
‘Kamēr’ works together with one of Europe’s most distinguished orchestras - Kremerata Baltica, as well as a number of world-class musicians including the conductor and tenor Peter Schreier, the violinist Gidon Kremer, the cellist Marta Sudraba and the violist Yuri Bashmet.
