With its special place in the collective conscience of Latvians
The deep sense of respect and even veneration that Latvians hold toward bread – as the sustenance of Life - comes naturally. The high esteem for bread reflects a respect towards man and hard work- the product of the man’s collaboration with Nature. The smell of rye-bread baked at home is special and unforgettable. When a home is filled with the aroma of freshly baked rye bread, uniting man and nature, the Latvian conscience is truly complete.
Since 4000 years ago, when the first Baltic tribes settled in the territory of the present-day Latvia, life-style has changed tremendously. Yet, the Latvian love of their land and bread has persevered over the ages.
Latvians traditionally eat dark rye-bread which plays an essential role in Latvian culture and folklore. Bread is ritually offered to the guests on different life-cycle occasions: birth of a baby, wedding and funeral. Each baker uses their own unique traditional recipes. The appearance, taste and aroma of a loaf of bread differ in every village and farmstead, but the essence is undeniably Latvian. The feelings associated with bread are not for words to describe – it is all about taste and smell and memories.
