Latvian National Opera

The Latvian National Opera (LNO) is the ‘diamond’ of Latvian culture – outstanding, world-acclaimed opera and ballet in a building that itself is an architectural and design masterpiece – a neoclassical building from 1863.

Founded in 1918, the Latvian National Opera has been a pillar for the development of the genre of classical music in Latvia. With its innovative and daring productions, today, the LNO has become an international success story. Not only its tours worldwide have raised remarkable resonance, world top guest conductors and singers have participated in the productions in Riga. In its season running from September till the end of May, the LNO gives an average of 200 opera and ballet performances.

LNO’s productions have been shown in Asia on several occasions. In February 2009, the LNO performed Händel’s ‘Alcina’ and Shostakovich’s ‘Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk’ at the Hong Kong Arts Festival. Since 1998 the LNO’s opera and ballet troupes have performed in Beijing, Tsingtao, Dalian, Taichung, Kaoshung, Macau, Tainan, Macau and Taipei.
