BMX cycling racer Māris Štrombergs

Once you know your goal, there is one thing left to do – achieve it!

In 2008, a BMX bicycle racer Māris Štrombergs became the first Latvian athlete to simultaneously win the European, Olympic and world championship titles. He also became the first ever  Olympic title-holder in BMX cycling. That same year, Māris Štrombergs was voted as Latvia’s best and most popular athlete. To mark his achievement, the Latvian Post issued a BMX postage stamp.

Māris Štrombergs’ rise to the pinnacle of BMX sports was obviously not a matter of good luck. The Latvian athlete has been training hard since the age of 5 and experienced his first noteworthy achievement at the age of 9 when he became the world champion in his age group at a competition in England. In 2001 he won the European junior champion title. And then the 2008 Olympic medal.
In 2009, Štrombergs added two more wins to his growing list of victories. He became the USA National Cycling League Champion and the American Cycling Association’s Vice-champion.  Moreover, this year Māris has already won three out of four USA National Cycling League competitions.
