Valmiera is the eighth largest city in Latvia, as well as the main administrative, economic, educational, cultural and sports centre in the central region of Vidzeme. It is a city with an active economic and social life, rich with historical traditions, working assiduously to ensure its sustainable, long-term development.
Valmiera places great importance on its historical heritage and on its natural environment, while simultaneously promoting the development of a modern, industrial urban centre that is an attractive and desirable place to live.
As an industrial and manufacturing city, andl as the main centre of business and trade in Vidzeme, Valmiera has been home to most of the region’s largest enterprises since the early 20th century. Some of these enterprises are also known outside of Latvia’s borders. The companies that operate from Valmiera are the largest providers of employment in the region, offering jobs not only to the city’s inhabitants, but also to those who live in the rest of the region.
Valmiera has been rapidly developing as an industrial centre, while simultaneously retaining its status as one of the greenest cities in Latvia. The city has shown that industrial development and environment-friendly practices can be compatible and can be implemented to ensure sustainable development, based on the principles of dialogue and partnership – i.e. pragmatic cooperation between the municipal government, the business community and the general public. The sensible use of European Union financing for long-term projects is also working for the benefit of the city’s infrastructure, economy and inhabitants.
Valmiera – a blossoming city that is working for the welfare of the entire Vidzeme region.
