Rēzekne, poetically described as a flower bursting into bloom, is a city in the heart of the Latgale region in eastern Latvia and is one of the region’s main administrative and cultural centres. From a tourist’s point of view, practically all roads in Latgale lead through Rēzekne, which is located about 240 km east of Latvia’s capital city and which lies at an important road and railway junction on the Moscow–Riga and Saint Petersburg-Warsaw routes.
This advantageous geographic location, along with a Special Economic Zone designed to attract foreign investors, creates good conditions for Rēzekne’s continued, successful development.
For centuries, Rēzekne has been a centre of spirituality, culture and education. It is surronded by the picturesque scenery of green, hilly fields, blue lakes, unpaved roads and pristine forests.
Traditional pottery forms a vital part of culture and tourism in Rēzekne and its surroundings. The annual pottery days and openings of new kilns are important fixtures in the social calendar of Latgale. The ceramics masters of Latgale are always ready to open their studio doors to visitors. Rēzekne is proud of the fact that its Latgalian potters – masters of clay project received a top award in the European Commission’s European Destinations of Excellence competition.
